What is birth photography?

To a certain extent, it's self-explanatory. Birth photography documents the story of your baby's arrival, from active labor through those first precious moments after birth.

The details of labor often blur together. Maybe you're like me and close your eyes during contractions to visualize and work through each wave. While you're completely focused on bringing your baby into the world, there is so much happening around you that you may never fully take in.

You won't notice your doula quietly wetting a washcloth to cool your forehead.

Your mother's clasped hands as she prays through an intense contraction.

The way you leaned into your husband's shoulders and swayed together through each wave.

The smile that spread across your partner's face the moment your baby arrived.

The relief that washed over the room when your baby was placed on your chest.

That very first cry.

Those first tiny stretches.

Those moments deserve to be remembered.

You shouldn't have to worry about documenting them yourself—you should be fully present, living them.

That's where I come in.

Whether you're giving birth in a hospital, birth center, or at home, I quietly enter during active labor and document your story as it naturally unfolds. My goal is never to interrupt or direct your experience. Instead, I preserve it exactly as it happened, continuing through the first hour after birth with calm, documentary-style images of your new family together.



Why do families hire a birth photographer?

Birth is one of the most life-changing experiences you'll ever have.

People spend months preparing for it, and then it happens in what feels like the blink of an eye.

Having given birth five times myself, I still look back on the moment each baby was placed on my chest as five of the very best moments of my life.

Those memories are priceless.

I think families hire me because they want those moments preserved with care. They also appreciate that I have a calm, quiet presence. I'm there to document what's happening—not to orchestrate it. Your birth belongs to you, and my role is simply to tell your story.

What can you expect when you book me?

I like to get to know my clients before birth day.

We'll schedule a coffee date (and if coffee isn't your thing, we'll absolutely find something else) so we can meet, chat, and make sure we're a great fit.

During that meeting, I'll learn about your birth preferences, who's on your birth team, what moments are most important to you, and answer any questions you have.

When labor begins, your designated contact—whether that's your partner, doula, midwife, mom, sister, or someone else—will keep me updated.

Once you've reached active labor, I'll head your way and begin documenting your story.

One question I get asked often is whether I photograph graphic images.

The answer is simple: only if you specifically request them.

Most of my clients want the emotion, connection, anticipation, and joy—not graphic medical images. Your comfort and preferences always come first.

What is my favorite part?

Without question, hearing that first cry.

There is something incredibly special about witnessing a brand-new life enter the world.

Watching parents, siblings, and grandparents fall in love in real time is one of the greatest privileges of my job. Every birth is different, but that overwhelming feeling of love never gets old.

Birth photography vs. Fresh 48

These sessions tell two different parts of your family's story.

Birth photography begins during active labor and documents your baby's arrival along with those unforgettable first moments after birth.

A Fresh 48 session happens within the first day or two after delivery, once everyone has had a chance to rest a little. Mom has hopefully grabbed a shower, everyone has taken a breath, and we create relaxed, lightly posed images that celebrate your brand-new baby.

Many families choose one or the other, while some love having both to tell the complete story.

What do I wish more people knew about birth photography?

I wish more people knew that birth photography isn't about graphic images.

It's about storytelling.

It's about preserving the strength you didn't know you had.

The people who supported you.

The emotions that filled the room.

The tiny details that phone photos simply can't capture because everyone who loves you is busy being present with you.

Years from now, these photographs become part of your family's story.

Will my birth photos be shared online?

Only with your permission.

Before your birth, we'll talk through your privacy preferences, and I always honor them. Your birth story belongs to your family, and you remain in control of how—or if—your images are ever shared.

When should you book?

I recommend booking during your second trimester or very early in your third trimester.

Of course, you're welcome to reserve your due date during the first trimester as well. I just know from experience that the first trimester isn't always the season when you feel like planning much of anything.
