It's intimidating- "My kids are too wild." "My kids smiles weird for the camera." "My kids will fight me about the outfit I pick." "My kid is too shy." "My husband doesn't want to pay for photos when we are fighting for our lives to smile."

I get it. It feels like too much. When I photograph families with little ones, I like to have a few tricks up my sleeves, keep a flexible mindset, and already have a clear list of poses and prompts to get through so that we get them (even if it has to happen out of order). I LOVE playfulness and movement in photos, and the genuine expressions those moments bring that you see in normal life.

Without further ado, I asked Emi a few post session questions, and wanted to share her answers with you:

-What’s one moment from your session that still makes you smile when you think about it?

Rachel made my husband and I feel so comfortable and not awkward at all in front of the camera, which was greatly appreciated and not something we've experienced with every photographer we've worked with. She had fun questions to ask us to get us to laugh naturally, like "What is Emi's favorite drink?" and my husband and I answered at the same time. It was fun!

-How did your kids surprise you during the shoot? (Kids always have the best unplanned moments!

The kids did great and smiled/laughed throughout the shoot. It was nice of Rachel to ask about their favorite song, and she played it during the shoot to make the kids more comfortable and to give them something they were familiar with.

-If you could describe your session in three words, what would they be?

Relaxed, fun, and enjoyable!

-Was there a photo from your gallery that instantly became a favorite — and why?

My favorite photo from our gallery was this one pictured below. We all look joyful, and we actually decided to use this shot for the front of our Christmas card!

-How did you prepare your family for the session? (Any funny outfit stories or last-minute mishaps?)

No mishaps, but tried to plan our outfits to be cohesive in terms of the overall color scheme!

-What advice would you give to another family with little ones preparing for their photo session?

I would say to make sure your kids are fed, have ideally had their naps if they're still at that age, and that they're wearing comfortable clothing so that they can just enjoy the photoshoot alongside you.

Friends, are any of you in the "let's wait till they're older for photos" stage? I know I've been there. I just want you to know that IT'S NOT JUST YOUR KIDS, and it's totally fine if we have to take things at a different pace- fast before they meltdown or slow so that they warm up to the camera. It may feel chaotic sometimes, but that's the beauty of a photo- the moment and expressions and everyone together, without the decibels. ;)

So glad you landed on my page, dear reader, and I hope I can help capture your moments someday- even in the chaos of the "little years."

Thanks for reading!

~Rachel
